Ford Ranger

I'm looking at buying a 2003 Ford Ranger 4 wheel drive automatic. I know it's not able to be flat towed but how do I find out if it can be towed with a dolly?

  • Disconnect the rear driveshaft at the axle yoke and you can tow any year/model Ranger 4-down, or front wheels up on a dolly.
  • I was considering a Ranger as a toad and discovered just about all manual transmissions can be towed 4 down. Unfortunately only the later models with automatics and 4WD can also be towed 4 down. You need to check but I think that began in 2006 and one needed the Neutral Tow Kit as well as a reprogramming? It definitely wasn't doable in 2003 which was the years I was looking for. As others have said, driveshaft removal or driveshaft disconnects can make almost any Ranger towable.

I gave up on Rangers and got a VW Beetle instead. It was much lighter and way better on gas.
  • Read my answer to that post . However just remove the rear driveshaft and put the trans in park with the key in acc. I've towed mine over 5 K miles and when you get where your going just put in 4 wheel drive high and off you go. I'm driving mine in 4 wheel now and have been sense April. When you hook back up make sure your frt. wheel are out of 4 wheel. Automatic hubs.
    disengaged.
  • Keep looking, you'll find something that fits your needs and budget you can tow 4 down or on a dolly.

    Electronically controlled Transfer Case?

It MIGHT be towable with a "neutral kit." A misnomer because the "Kit" consists of a dealer re-flash of the PCM, instructions for a routine to cause the PCM to put the electronic transfer case into Neutral, and the hardware part is an indicator light that confirms Neutral.

The "Kit" is no longer available, but the re-flash is, the instructions can still be found, and the Indicator can be gotten at Radio Shack.

This only works on SOME 4WD Fords. Not on any "full time" or AWD ones. Most of the ones I've heard of being modded this way are Explorers, so it might depend on the exact power train in the Ranger.
  • do seearch of the dingy towing guides from trailer life. But LOOK at the ownes manual, if cant be towed 4 down due to the trans it will be the same for a dolly. remember you have 2 driveshafts and putting the front on a dolly still means the rear is going to be engaged.

Here I looked up, the answer is not what you want:
