Re: diesel.
I have full timed for the last 2 years and have bought diesel fuel all over the country. I use the Gasbuddy app to find the cheapest fuel and fill up after I set up the 5er at the end of the day.
In general, during the summer, you will not have any fuel related problem if you buy diesel at a name brand truck stop out on the interstates because these places turn over a lot of fuel. When I am traveling on 2 lane highways, I generally try to find a name brand station in a larger town that's close by. This is where Gasbuddy comes in. Whichever station has the cheapest price will probably sell the most fuel, which means they will also have the freshest fuel. I also treat my fuel with the Ford additive, but that's because I want to add a lubricity enhancer.
In general, I really don't worry about the quality of diesel fuel. But I am just a little picky at where I buy it.
In winter, all bets are off, especially during that first really nasty cold snap. That's when you find out which stations have switched over to a mix of #1 and #2 and which ones are still selling straight #2. I'm also from Iowa - been there and DONE THAT.
