We have a 2012 GMC diesel and carry our bikes on a front hitch. I've seen truck campers carrying there generator on a front hitch. A front hitch will be below the bumper so things will be lower. We have a curt hitch, easy install bolts to the frame using existing holes. Go to curt hitch web site and fill out info for which of there hitches. Write down the model number and go to amazon and look up that model. It's cheaper through amazon. I don't think you will have a problem with air flow.
