I had an RDS 40 gallon auxiliary tank/toolbox combo installed in my truck just before I went fulltime, so I carry about 78 gallons in total. I always refuel after I've pulled into a campground for the evening and unhooked. I just use Gasbuddy to find the cheapest close by fuel, which is usually Murphy or Racetrack or something similar. At the prices you paid at Pilot, you could probably have already paid for an aux tank.
Whenever the subject of aux tanks comes up (regularly), someone always states they have to stop once in a while anyway to 'rest', and of course, I do too. But there are rest stops on all the Interstates and innumerable places along the 2 lane highways where you can pull over. To each their own, but I would rather have the extra money in my pocket to use for something else.
AND - if you use a rewards credit card, you'll get $$ back. It's crazy, but it actually costs me more to use cash or a debit card then to use my credit card.
