General RV Dealership in Ohio

I am looking to purchase a Class A from General RV in Ohio and I was wondering if anyone has had positive or negative experiences with them. I purchased my last RV from Holman RV in Ohio and had no issues and the trip from RI was well worth it.

  • I'd pick nearly anyone but General. So few trouble free experiences compared to other midwest dealers. If you are willing to travel to Ohio, can you considered Holman, RVW, RV Direct, even some of the dealers near Elkhart?

General RV is a very large company with several stores in Michigan plus the Ohio and Flordia stores.

The result is mixed reviews... And that is about all I will say.. My own RV was purchased at the Wixom (MI) store.. And my personal experience has been mixed.

For the most part it was good but.. They messed up the brake system install on my towed costing me a full brake job rotors included. (OUCH). And when they did the Dometic Recall I mentioned they failed (on delivery) to put the drip tube outside like they are supposed to.. The Technician returning my keys to the service consultant said "I always do that" Guess what. he did'nt.

Oh the other hand when I had some warranty issues, they took care of 'em promptly.
  • Two members of our local Good Sam chapter have purchased class A MHs at the General RV in Ohio. They both were satisfied with the dealings.

General RV is a large family owned dealership.

I don't want to bash the company. Since you asked, I'll share my experience.
I bought a Monaco from them. They added a 200.00 charge for a complete inspection. I didn't think it was fair but if they inspected everything like they said they did, I guess I could justify the cost. The guy doing the pdi walk through knew nothing about the MH. He said it was a Work Horse chassis by GM. I said it's a Roadmaster chassis and he disagreed and went on to the next item. When we get out side he points to the fuel door and says it has one on each side. He told me he inspected everything and it was all good to go. They had a washer dryer in stock and they agreed to install it while we waited. We headed for home and parked it in the drive way. I came out an hour later and it wouldn't start. I looked at the batteries and they obviously had been frozen and the tops were lifted and bulging. They wouldn't hold a charge. So much for my inspection. I bought all new batteries and installed them myself and headed down to get some fuel. I pulled up to the pump and no dual fuel doors like I was told. Moved the MH to the other side of the pump. Fuel door locked and no key and not enough fuel to go anywhere. Called a locksmith to come out and open the door and get a key made. Thought this was all behind me and headed to Florida. On the way the crank for TV antenna fell off and pieces landed on the floor. Then the slide wouldn't go out. While there the wife decides to use the newly installed washer. It flooded the floors and I turned the water off and cleaned up the mess. Cut our vacation short so we could stop at General on the way home to get the washer fixed. They discovered that when they installed it a water line was cut. By then I was out of patience. I sent them an Email expressing my disappointment. They had me bring it back an leave it for a week. They did fix everything but billed it to my extended warranty and reimbursed me for the keys and batteries. They charged me 110.00 per hr for the washer install and had 8.00 per hr people working on it.

Just remember they are all USED CAR SALESMEN.
  • I bought a Monaco DP from them and the whole thing was a disaster.
  • We bought from General in Jacksonville (same company) and did not have any problems at all. They were pleasant to deal with and delivered as promised.
  • It's been a number of years since we bought from General. No problems and their service at the time was so-so. In later years I took a RV in for repair I had not bought there and it took them forever to fix it. But that seems to be common to fix your buying customer items before you do the off the street items.
