Getting trailer from dealer home w/out WDH

Hey guys, after all of my threads my wife and I finally decided on a Primetime Lacrosse. We pick it up Saturday. I have an WDH coming in today but I doubt I will be able to get it assembled by Saturday. Will I be ok to tow the trailer 50 miles (non-highway, no more than 45-50mph)

I really don't feel like trying to set everything up in the dealer parking lot. Below are the specs on my equipment.

TV
2012 F250 Diesel
17k/1.75k Class Hitch
Multiball

TT
35'
8000#'s
900# TW

I know this is not ideal but can it be done? I am pretty stressed trying to get everything lined out before Saturday. I don't want to be sweating the hitch when I need to be concentrating on the PDI.

  • If your F-250 won't do what you want, then you better get a Chevy. Just kidding, but GM does not require a WD hitch in your situation. You might want one, but what you are describing will not be a problem. Even for a Ford. :-)
  • Brirene, it is an Equal-I-zer. I have printed out the manual and it doesn't seem terribly complicated and I am sure I can do it on my own and frankly I just don't trust dealers with that type of work if I can do it myself. I just didn't want to have to mess with it in the middle of their parking lot. I would be in a bind rounding up the larger sockets/wrenches I need and finding someone to torque the ball for me.

Just called, no policy in place regarding leaving the lot w/out WD hitch.
  • Do you know how to set up the wdh? Maybe the dealer would be willing to work with you on set up and proper use. Depending on your comfort level, might be worth the time to get it set up by them.
  • You could get it home no problem, but a good dealer, selling a trailer, would install it for free for you! If he wants more business, that is.
  • Rhagfo/GMW, thank you for the heads-up, that little surprise would have sucked. I will call this AM and verify their policy.

There is a strong possibility that the dealer will require you to have the hitch installed to tow the trailer off their lot.

I believe this has to do with their liability insurance.

Well, or sign a form that says you are taking it off the lot on a weight carrying hitch, and are assuming all liability yourself.
When I picked up my trailer, they had me sign such a form.

  • Thank you guys for the response. That really takes a load off of my chest.

With your rig, I don't see a problem towing it home with no WD.
