Going from 5er to TT question

Hey all,

We're looking at going from a 33' 8" 5er to a 33' 6' TT. How does a TT back up compared to a 5 wheel of the same length since the TT is longer since it's on the "bumper" instead of the bed of the truck. When backing into sites at campgrounds, does the TT setup need more room to swing so narrow camp roads are more difficult?

    Because the hitch is behind the rear wheels of the truck the trailer will more closely follow the truck where the 5th wheel will cut the corner a little short. Backing up is different but if you can get around the campground with the 5ers you will do just as well with a TT.

    I've had both and find very little difference in backing up once you've done both many times. The biggest difference is initial reaction to steering wheel movement. I prefer backing a TT.

    In tight situations you can jackknife a 5er to a greater degree than a TT, 90 degrees or more with some configurations. If you are used to doing that, don't try it with the TT or you may be hitting the tongue on the bumper.
    But you can still back it into some pretty tight places. Just something to remember.

    Practice in an empty lot with cones...it will become second nature just like with the 5th wheel.

    I know about the 5er reacting slower ... it bugged the wife to no end when I didn't start turning when she told me to. But I'm a bit worried (or was until reading the responses) about the added length even though the rigs are the same overall length.

    A TT responds quicker to steering wheel movement when backing up, either type of trailer is easy to maneuver with practice. We've been in some tight campgrounds with our similar sized TT and have had no issues, but we take it slow and easy under those circumstances.

    wish I could tell you I have never backed up a 5th wheel, but my trailer at 33 foot I think is pretty forgiving, I have not hit anything or found a spot I could not get in and trust me I am no expert...
