The trouble with article like this is that the people that should read them never will. And those that do read it are good folks that you never have trouble with anyway.

You don't need a deed or lease. It's like renting a motel room. The fee you pay is a rental fee. So your site is your private domain for the time you are using it. So yes, I'm territorial and this is a pet peeve of mine. Unless your site was free, it's yours for the duration of your stay. If you want people to tramp though your site you might as well put up lawn chairs at a mall.
Moreover many campground spell it out and yet their patrons ignore it. The good news is that it's fairly rare and only happens in places that cater to party campers, or as you said, sites that have beach/trail/whatever access. Easy enough to avoid those sites.
BTW, we had a very strange incident many years ago. A guy from the neighboring site kept cutting through ours even though it wasn't a direct route to the bathrooms. His wife, kids, and guests never once cut through. A few days into the trip we figured out what was going on. He was trying/hoping to get a look at my wife changing in the pop-up. He would always wait until I left the site for something. His wife caught on because we heard some arguing going on after he returned from one of his "trips". He never came back through and they left a day early.
