Yes it could and can happen, how many x per 1,000 oil changes I wonder?
I do ALL my own work typically on my own cars because I'm a cheap @ss AND because it literally would take me longer to take it somewhere on a Sat morning and back home than to change oil in the garage.
BUT, in 25 years of taking my company trucks in average every 2 months, plus 100s of other trucks I'e been responsible for, I have had one bad experience that could have caused major failure. Guy left the fill plug out of the rear diff and it sprayed oil all over.
I can think of 2 botched oil changes that I've personally done in the same last 25 years, and both of them were when I was servicing multiple vehicles/equipment at the same time.....so maybe I should take mine in??? LOL
