Growing your own vegies ?

I started a small tommato plant growth. 1 is upside down the other normal. Now I realize there are those that do not wish to bother but as a new fulltimer starting in 2 weeks. I would like to know how many have a garden on the road.
  • I'm a seasonal at a campground and noticed that one of our traveling, full- timers slit open a bag of potting soil and stuck a tomato plant in it. It's producing a wonderful amount of tomatoes. :-)
  • Not that they are pretty pots, but my mom grows tomatoes in old coolers. she leaves the drains open (easy since many coolers lose them) and the insulation helps them stay cooler and require a little less water. Handles make them easier to move if you need to relocate. would probably work for fulltimers, and you probably can find coolers with missing drain plugs and busted hinges at the campground trash bin.
  • I have kept potted geraniums up top 4 years while fulltiming. We normally volunteer about 9 mos of the year, north in the summer and south in the winter. I trim them back and remove any buds before travel. I just place them in the back of the truck and water daily before traveling.
I have grown container patio tomatoes while volunteering during the summer months. You must pay attention to watering, sometimes twice a day.

Last fall I planted a garden at a friend's S&B where I was driveway camped for a few months. He's still eating off it :).

Some RV parks will let you have a garden in pots... maybe even in the ground. Community gardens, where you rent a plot for a season, would also be worth looking into.

I also had a few pots of herbs when on the road. I plan to do much more this year. Can you put tubs on your roof? What sort of rig do you have?
  • When we first began full-timing we had a truck/5th wheel. We tried to keep outdoor potted flowers. It was an absolute pain. I guess if you don't travel you could easily do it but they need attention and get bugs. We wouldn't want to bring them inside a motorhome when traveling. For us, we just tossed them in the rear of the truck for our moves. Even then, they got windblown, flowers fell off and you need a way to secure them. A dumped over pot of black dirt is not fun.
  • Good luck with that

First off 'they' need consistent sun and water.

Changes in location will affect both

Heck this is our third season at growing tomatoes and finally have some that look/taste like tomatoes,,,,,,,,,and we are in a S&B now.

Then there is the transporting.......cleaned up a turned over plant more than once when GF attempted this when we were traveling.

    CHIA PET HERBS :B
  • We have a long narrow planter for growing fresh herbs.
    Easy to move around.
  • I do not but I have seen tomato plants by RVs at campgrounds. I just returned to gardening but we spend much of our summer at home. Not the large garden we used to have but enough to have fresh tomatos and a dew other things.
