GVWR/Towing capacity question

This new Dodge lists the GVWR at 6,350lbs and a towing capacity of 9,200lbs. I thought your GVWR was your towing capacity. Help in layman's terms? Thanks folks...

Should be listed on the door jamb tire sticker.

It is not on the door sticker. It is usually found in the towing section of the owners manual.

  • What would you folks say is a safe dry weight trailer weight with this truck. It is quite a step up from my f150 I have now. My STX just has the 4.6L engine and it kind of struggles in the mountains of NC.

  • No Dodge there, but a Ram Truck. 9200 is what it can pull with a flat bed trailer of low stuff with 10% tongue weight. Travel trailers are a different breed of trailers. I personally take "tow rating" with a grain of salt. You will max out something else before you reach 9200 pounds. Not saying, a lot of people are a little over, but the weight police will put me in the pen for that.
  • The GVWR is the max your TV can weigh fully loaded to go, including everything in it plus the TT hitch weight. The towing capacity is more a marketing number and the least reliable of any of the ratings. With a ½ ton, payload is typically the rating that limits you, you’ll exceed that before you get near any tow rating. In any event, you don’t want to push the ratings if you want to enjoy the tow.
  • In layman's terms:

GVWR = The maximum that the Dodge can weigh.
GCWR = The maximum that the Dodge and the trailer can weigh.

FAWR = The maximum that the front axle of the Dodge can weigh.
RAWR = The maximum that the rear axle of the Dodge can weigh.

What you can tow (What it can pull) = GCWR - Actual weight of the Dodge.
Your Dodge's payload (what it can carry) = GVWR - Actual weight of the Dodge.
