Hail damage insurance claim

I've never dealt with an insurance adjuster or anything like this so would like some insite on the process. Our 5th wheel got hit by major hail damage a few days ago. The rubber roof looks in tact but tho roof is left with thousands of dents you can see and feel. Is this damage enough for a new roof? It seems the underlying wood is heavily dented.

If they come out and issue a estimate can I negotiate the price higher. I plan on keeping the money ad doing the repairs myself as Im knowledgeable on how to do it. Also should I clean the rv and make it look nice wash/wax in order to make the rv look more valuable/maintained.
  • If the insurance company were to total it, you usually can have first dibs to buy it for the scrap value, which is usually pocket change.
  • Wait and see what they say.

Basically when you bought insurance, you got a promise from that insurance company that they would pay for damage to your RV if you crashed into anything, and they would buy your RV for fair market value of you destroyed it by fire, accident, or whatever they agreed to cover in your policy. So if hail is a covered event, you will get it "Back good as new" - well good as 4 years old, or 10 years old, as the case might be. So if the insurance agent looks at the RV and says it needs a new 6,500 roof, and has some sidewall damage to the tune of $1,400, then they can say "this RV is 10 years old, and a good used one will cost $6,500 to replace it". So they might total it, or say "We can fix it like this never happened for $8,500 and your 2 year old RV is worth $17,500 replacement, so we will have it fixed."

It all depends on how old the RV is, if it can be repaired for less than replacing it, and how they feel that day.

Yes if you feel you did not get enough for the repair, you can ask for more. I have heard of some pretty generous offers to repair a RV, because it can get expensive.

My sister just bought a new 8' X 26' piece of sheet metal and replaced the roof of her toy hauler. I think the total job was less than $800 with her and her husband providing all the labor. Some misc. materials, sealants around the edges, ect.

  • We are in Amarillo now and have no lien on the 5th wheel or truck

In Texas, If you have the title free and clear, they will issue a check to you and you can do as you please. If there is a lien holder on the title, the check will be made out to both parties.
