Had the same experience accept they said if they didn't have the repair kit they would have replaced it with a chinese current model. In my case I had already taken it apart and cleaned it and only needed a locking ring that went flying across the room when I took it apart. It was alright inside just needed cleaning. They cleaned it again in their special solvent, lubed and reassembled with a new lock ring. No charge. Works like it did when I bought it in 1972.
