There is a reason you don't see many commercial rigs running super singles....cost and limited availability....changing to wide wheels and tires is not for the faint of heart...with the limited miles driven by RV'ers, there would never be a payback to justify a change out.

Neither is my 32K pound registered "private truck", pulling my 5th wheel. I can't count the number of times I've blown by them in OR.

Just my real world experience, yours may differ.

I also agree on the questionable use of a farm tag...but ya never know 'til you try. I would think the insurance might be an issue with dual use.

I think jaxdad is correct ,the 'baby' hitch on my truck along with lack of glad-hands screams RV- non commercial,I never get a second look.
Be very very careful trying to duel use a truck this big.

From the Sask. website regarding farm plates;

"Vehicles registered with farm plates can be driven for personal purposes by anyone the farmer chooses to allow, without time or distance restrictions. However, heavy vehicles with farm plates operated outside of Saskatchewan must comply with the requirements of the jurisdiction they are in."

We've had questions raised before by LEO's and assorted DOT's when hauling horses across the States. In almost every case they wanted proof of some kind that they were ours and not being hauled for others for money.

The other 'yardstick' they use to judge commercial use or not is the fifth wheel itself, if its a standard commercial unit they look at you a little sideways, but if its a smaller 'RV' or even Holland mini-fifth they realize that you can't haul a commercial OTR trailer and pretty much leave you alone.

As long as you stay in your home state, farm plates will probably work on the RV. However, once you cross state lines, the other states are going to want you to stop. Now,what do you do? You have a truck, licensed for farm work, pulling a RV? Not licensed right. That other state will want license, and money.

I have heard of some doing both. License farm, and also license as RV. Not sure how works, but that is what they say. Change plates when change to RV. ??

Just check it out before you go to another state. It might get expensive otherwise.

With a 20,000 pound rear axle, you can tow a very heavy load, with single rear axle. I just wonder what you plan on towing that would require dual rear axles to tow it.

If I where to get a Volvo, I proably would change it to super singles, and go with single rear wheels. I don't think you should have any problems towing a RV with a tractor registered as a "Farm Vehicle". Some states you would need to pull into commercial scales. In Oregon, they are posted "Trucks over 20,000 GVWR must stop at open scales" A RV is not required to stop, it is not a truck, however a farm vehicle would need to stop, even if towing a RV.

Your best bet may be "US Rider" - owning horses - or towing trlr with horses *not* necessary.

could never do that in Ontario.

You might have a problem with LEO using it for recreation also!

We would be licensing it with farm plates, that's why we're preventing as a tandem

Darn auto sub on tablet! We are leaving it as a tandem and plating it with farm plates. That may be where we have trouble in getting any coverage.
