I know that Ford quit buying the 6.0 Diesel from Navistar after having a lot of head gasket issues. Last year I paid $8000 for repairs and upgrades. I haven't heard too many bad things about the newer engines.
I think your best bet is to test drive them. You're going to get a lot of personal opinions here. The real test will be a long drive in one. It would be nice if you could rent one and try it on a long drive. My ex had back problems and couldn't take long trips in her Explorer, but found my F-250 to be comfortable.
