Helped Out a Fellow RV'er

I was traveling north on I65 yesterday morning in central Alabama to pick up a couple of parts for my 5'er and I saw a large Raptor TH southbound pulled over on the side. I knew I would be coming back south in 15 minutes or so and sure enough he was still there so I pulled in behind him to see if I could help. He had a blowout on his right rear tire and broke his socket taking off the lug nuts. He said he needed a 13/16 socket real bad. I had one as well as a long breaker bar. He finished taking off his wheel and was on his way shortly. He offered to pay me, but I told him just to remember what I looked like in case the roles were reversed some day. The last time I saw him he was traveling south on I65 at the 219 mm.

The tires looked ok with plenty of tread, but we all know about that. I didn't snoop to see the age of the tires. They were ST235/80-16 and Towmax or at least the flat one was. It blew out according to the owner loud enough that he heard it. By the time he got stopped it had damaged the side of his rig including destroying his electrical wiring in that area. The entire tread came off and was wrapped around the axle inside the brake drum. He had a heck of a time unwrapping it. Fortunately his brake wiring was not damaged.

I was glad I was able to help. He had called his road service, but was expecting a long wait.

  • I helped a guy in a similar fashion... I always have an "e" bag in the truck. A volt meter, fuses, wire, butt connectors...

The tire wrapped around the axle.. Tore the brake wiring on the axle... Pulled the tire.. Patched the wire... And on his way.... He asked for my email.. I gave it to him... On his way back through we hooked up for a meal, been friends since. He is 25yrs older then me... A solid dude... Take care of each other, your name is all you have in the end.

I just had a tire issue. On my Open Range passenger side there is heavy guage metal covers above the tires riveted in 3 places to the frame.  The rear one apparently came loose, droping down on the tire and skinned it in seconds. The metal buckled up in layers over the tire. Only way to get it off and put on the spare was to cold chisel it off, somthing I don't carry. Called my Good Sam road side assistance, they were worthless saying they will send a tow truck if they can find one. A real good samaritan stopped and had a cold chisel, helped with the spare too.  I was on the road soon, left a cnote on his drivers seat, he was a good guy. Adding cold chisel to the e kit.

Probably would have been a good contribution to the topic 11 years ago....

  • Yep, it's always good to have a variety of good tools on the truck. You just never know when you'll come across that situation.

Your post made me chuckle remembering years ago one evening my son and I broke three Craftsman sockets in a row trying to get a lug nut off one of his buddies cars !
  • There is a country song called, "Chain of Love" that deals with this subject. What goes around comes around, how true! We should all be willing to help others if it is safe to do so, and if we are able to do so. JMO
  • Well Done.

This was the basic premise of Good Sam many years ago. One RVer helping another. If I remember right, when you joined Good Sam you had to pledge to help other RVers if you could do so safely.

    How times have changed.
