Let me put it this way... In his book 1984 (Which is about the Lennon type communists) George Orwell had cameras all over the place.
In reality, it was a bit later for the most part but cameras started to get used big time along about 1980.. I know since I was in an office that benefited from them and there were cameras up as far back as the 70s.
You can google "Traffic Cameras" and you will find many all over the world, or if you want to save some clicks www.michigan.gov/mdot click on traffic conditions (As I recall) and you can get to the state owned traffic cameras, at least the ones NOT currently being used for close up surveillance of incidents by the state police. yes, most of those cameras are delivered to police dispatchers.
I see signs in some private campgrounds "THIS ARE UNDER VIDEO SURVEILLANCE" and .. Some of the things I know from those cameras.
Story goes that the idiot (Who clearly did not know how to read) was taking bicycles out of the bike rack in front of the family center....
How do we know this.. Next morning the park Assistant Manager was sitting at the manager's desk, across the desk sat Master Idiot and his grandfather.. Master Idiot was looking a bit... repentant, Grandpa... Pissed. They were watching the video of Idiot swiping bicycles.
As for the Parks service or Forest service not being too forthcoming on why the cameras were there.... Standard Police response to most everything is "NO Comment" and for very good reason I might add. Having worked for 9-1-1. I know we had that line drilled into use big time.
Though I do recall one case where a reporter called and I offered to tell him everything I knew about it... Then I added that I'd read the article in the competitor's newspaper.. he thanked me but was not interested in what I knew (Absolutly NOTHING beyond what was in the other newspaper)
