Hidden Costs of RVing

Everything in life seems to end up having unforseen costs that were never anticipated, when starting out on a new venture. What are some of your unanticipated costs of RVing. For me, it was removing three large trees, so that I could park my 5er with minimal shuttling back and forth. I didn't have to do it but got tired of taking a 1/2 hour to turn my rig around. Others could be that 50 amp plug or widening your driveway at the culvert by the road. (I anticipated those two.)
  • Bug,

Covered parking... $200 / mth. (with elect./dump/RV wash). That
is an additional $2400.00/year. I hate paying it...but what you
going to do... one summer in direct summer sunlight and decals/tire
sidewalls/rubberized roof/window trim etc. is dead.

did I mention I hate paying it...

  • I'll report something I learned based on my parent's experience. When they had a class C, they built two storage buildings - one at home and one at their lake property. Unfortunately when they upgraded to a 32' Dolphin class A gasser, both buildings had to be modified for height and depth.

Even then, the mods were made to accommodate their rig. When the time comes to sell the property, while RV storage might be a selling feature, it might not if the space is not big enough for the potential buyer's rig.

Always good to think ahead of possible future upgrades! It is likely easier/cheaper to build with growth in mind, rather than modify.
  • Ours was going from a fiver with a one time license fee to a motorhome with a yearly tag. Over $ 1100.00 each year now. So add $1100.00 or so per year for every year we own it, it adds up "REAL" fast. Almost $100.00 per month just to drive the roads in MI with the MH.
  • The most expensive unforseen, which is just unforseen but actual to happen, is breakdown on the highway. Best be that this unforseen circumstance be anticipated and a plan set in your mind about how to deal with it.
  • Mine was probably spending the additional $55K on a new and improved Tow Vehicle in order to get to the "top of the hill" two minutes faster :W
