Actually the price for diesel and gasoline should be double what it is today. The taxes are needed to repair the 50% of US bridges that are in danger of falling down. We are freeloading on the work done after World War II in the 1950's and screwing our kids in the process.
We ARE paying enough into the transportation fund. The problem is in how the money is being spent. Many projects that have nothing to do with our highways are being funded from this money.
An example of this is the Million Dollar Plus bike path built over one of our local freeways. This was money taken out of our Federal gas tax and road use tax money.
Don't even get me started on all the "Add Ons" being done in modern day road building projects that balloon the final costs of our roads.
