Hitch locking pin failure

Yesterday I removed my hitch ball mount and installed my tow bar. I installed the locking pin and lock. I gave the lock a yank with my hand to be sure the lock was secure. This was what I ended up with. The remaining parts fell off. I know I have a little rust / corrosion but was not expecting this! I will be removing all locking pins of this type from service. It doesn't have a name brand on it, only CCP on the key

  • a good grade 8 bolt with self locking nut works well also. Dont know many who carry wrenches around to remove 3/4 or whatever size nuts/bolts!

It seems we need to lock all our towing hardware these days. Not so much for theft but for vandalism. There seems to be a subset of humanity who think it's fun to disconnect things and see what happens.

A little duct tape and you will be good as new. :)
  • I had the exact same thing happen last month. Used a grinder to cut it off. I replaced it with a similar product, not the same product. I like the idea of using a 5/8 pin with larger hole for a pad lock. If it happened again ill likely go that route.
  • Those things are worthless. I have removed several for friends when they lost their key. All it takes is one hit with a good size hammer and the locking ping pops right off. I go to a tractor supply and buy a 5/8 hitch pin with a larger hole and put a good padlock on it. Works great and and a lot better security.
