Most rv holding tank treatments state they break down waste and paper.
Yep - but what they don't tell you is how long it takes. RV waste tanks are dumped on regular basis so chemical additives don't have enough time to work. If your rigs going to sit for a few weeks in warm weather you can add a bottle of septic tank cleaner - that should help dissolve everything in the tank. - jplante4Explorer II

do not use bleach in your black tank for two reasons . . . it also reacts with the urine and lets off a bad poison in the air.
Right. That's why so many RVers have died tragically after adding bleach. :R - maddog348Explorer:B
- mitw44ExplorerIt's a holding tank, not a treatment tank. Use lots of water. Or, if you want to get fancy, use some dihydrogen oxide.
- beemerphile1ExplorerDecomp? It is a holding tank, not a septic system
We seldom use a deodorizer, mostly just use water. If you are getting odors there may be something wrong? - wa8yxmExplorer IIIMy Favorite brand is H20.. That's right, Water.
The treatments you pay for.. Might as well put the money in the toilet and flush.
The major source of "STINK" is not the black tank it's the gray, and even that.. I have found the only time I've had a "Stinky RV" was when I forgot to close the valves after dumping on site.. The STINK was coming out of the ground (Sewere system) not the RV.
Now I do, on occasion use a "Digester" product, but only when I know I'm going to be more time between dumps than I am comfortable with.. But normally, and since my wife died (I can go 2 weeks without emptying tanks now used to do it 4x that often when wife was about) . Well, I've not used much tank treatment.
