Holy Fruitcake Batman - Quote for flat towing

So....last week I sent a message to Carolina Coach & Marine in Claremont, NC about setting up our 2016 Ford Focus up for flat towing. Here's the response I got...

Thank you for your interest. There are a few more questions I need to give you a final quote. What I have so far is
Wiring $100-$300 (depending on what you already have)
Base plate $475.00
Patriot Breaking system $1395. If you don't have one already
Drop Receiver $100-300 if there is more than 1.5 inches from motor home to car
safety cables $100-300 depending on what you have for safety cables.
Aventa Tow bar $766.98

I need to know if you have:
Have you checked your owners manual to make sure you can flat tow without having to disengage anything?
Do you have manual or automatic transmission.
Is your car FWD/AWD/RWD,
Do you need the braking system, or do you have your own?
Do you want taillight wiring
Do you have any plugs on your car or camper that you will use to tow if so what do you have?
Will you need a drop reciever?
Will you need the safety cables?

That's a cost of between $2936.98-3536.98. But hold on to your seats. I asked him if that was the installed price and he said NO! He said he was in the parts department and would need to contact the service department to get installation prices. Are you kidding me?!

Just for giggles, I went on Amazon to look at what I could get some of these things for.

Patriot Braking system - $962
Blue Ox Base Plate - $380
Aventa Tow Bar - $551 (and that's for the LX 10,000 lb bar!)
  • Actually, with these new cars, the front fascia can be removed easily. Typically they are only held on by a few plastic button catches and a few screws. I can take the whole front off my Terrain in less than 15 minutes.

For the OP, I highly recommend you look at the ReadyBrute Elite tow bar. I comes equipped with a braking system all for the price of less than $1000. Base plates will indeed run $350 to $400 new, but if you check with ebay and craigslist, you can find it much cheaper. Wiring kit for lights, safety cables, and the umbilical cable kit will run another $200 or so.

I recently purchased this system from Amazon for my BFF for about $1800 total. Took us about four hours to do the complete install.

    Hope this helps

Brian - Look at all the monies saved by just having the wife follow you in the car haha...

I helped my neighbor who has the Class C setup and he got an end of year sale great deal on some new small car that was towable all four down.

He removed the whole front-end and grill etc of the small car to drill holes to mount his add-on hitch kit. I'm sure it came from AMAZON... This hitch allowed him to hook up at any angle using an extended tow-bar and then when you started pulling it forward it would snap-into correct position for towing. I thought that was kinda neat...

He has had great success with that one. Have no idea what the brand was but it all came in a kit...

Sure takes alot of guts to dissemble a brand new car front-end haha...

Well, you have options now. You can accept their prices or you can turn them down; do it yourself, or go elsewhere.

At least they were up front, and also let you know the information they needed to know to complete the job. There's no surprises now. It's in your ball park now.

That wasn't including them doing it....Would hate to see that quote. I would guess probably a quote of at least 6 hours, if not more at probably $125/hr. So probably at least another $750+ just for installation....
