Honda Generator Question

I have two 2000 Honda Generators with a parallel kit attached to one of them. I unfortunately do not have the companion but rather two standard 2000's. Here is my question that I can't seem to find the answer to...

When I am only using one of the Generators with my RV...can I plug the RV into the generator with the paralell kit attached that has the 30 amp recepticle or can the generator with the paralell kit attached only be used when the two are hooked together?

In other words is it better to use a 30 amp adapter on the generator without the kit attached...or is it okay to plug it into the one with the 30 amp kit attached?

Clear as mud? Thanks for any help!

If you have the parallel kit WITH the 30 amp outlet.. There is no need to get the Companion, the advantage of the companion is you use a cheaper parallel kit.

As to running just one.. Honda says "DO NOT" however, as noted above, many do.

I have never looked close up at the parallel kit,, I will make an assumption that being that the ends of the wires are protected so you can not touch a live wire (kind of like the power plug on the side of my computer) if this is the case I'd make a small weather case to cover the end of the cable with and unplug at least one of them if you only want one unit running. A pill bottle might be employed for this. or (Depending on the wire size) 2 blocks of wood with a gouge the wire lays in and THICK weatherstripping tape on the mating sides, Lay the wire in and clamp it with a spring clamp. 100% protection.
  • I used to do it all the time. Under partial load, I would run one or the other generator while paired up to the parallel kit. It doesn't matter which generator the parallel kit is mounted to, all that matters is that the kit is plugged into the running generator. I tried to keep the hours balanced on the two generators by doing this and not keeping one as a primary unit that ran more than the other.
  • There is always getting a Companion model, but the downside is making sure that your generator pair is run in tandem with hours balanced out.
  • You can plug the 30 amp plug into the parallel box without it being connected to the other gen. I do it and have had no issues.
  • There is no advantage to using the parallel plug , you will only get generator capacity .Which is easiest and quickest ?
  • I have seen the honda parallel kits used with only one generator running/attached, so I know it can be used in such a manner.

However you need to be mindful not to draw too many amps and overload your single generator, the same holds true of using one generator with the 30 to 15amp "cheater" adapter, do not use more than 15amp in the RV, or damage/fire will be the end result, safeties (breakers/over-current devices) can fail and shouldn't be relied on in place of common sense.
