What he said, only thing you can do now is pull the drain plug and open the relief valve and hope you are not buying a new tank in the spring.
And if you only have one by pass valve, it means you have check valves which are prone to failure and are a PITA. I would replace the check valves with single throw shut off valves and never again worry about the heater tank. I replaced mine and it was one of the best mods I ever did.
