How cold have you experienced?

We never would intentionally stay at a campground with our Class C if it's below 25 or 30F or above 90 and humid. But one thing we've learned in 35 + years is that it can get way colder or hotter than imagined no matter the location. 5 or more years ago in Big Bend NP it was very hot when we arrived in mid winter and within about 48 hours it was 7 degrees and very windy within sight of the Rio Grande. Of course, no running water or dumping in the campground. We were warned in advance and moved to the campground with hook-ups. We were scared but our furnace and elec. heater did keep it tolerable. Once in summer it was 107 where we stayed east of Nashville and the elec. was out for some sites. Always an adventure.
  • Many years ago I spent a weekend in a truck camper in sub-zero temps when deer hunting. I don't remember exactly how low. I do remember that I had my heater going full blast and the eye-level thermometer said 65 degrees, but the jug of milk sitting on the floor froze.
  • We usually have one or two nights below freezing every year and a couple days near 100. The hottest was 114 in Arizona but that was not as uncomfortable as 100 humid degrees in Virginia
  • Currently at property I own in Norton Pond Vt., single digit temps for the last week, snowmobiling and ice fishing lofe is good. My rig was custom ordered took 6 months to build, 2x4 steel frame, 6" blue board in the roof and floor, 3" inch in the wall and slide outs. Spent 2 weeks last winter in Edmonton Canada.

Never RV'd below 30F, without RV -55 (Non camping of course)
  • In our pop-up back in the mid '90s, we camped in late Oct a couple of years in a row and it got down to 29 on one of those trips. We were in West Yellowstone, MT once in June and it snowed, low of 30, in a hybrid trailer. Furnace kept up just fine. The hottest we've camped in was 100 in Las Vegas. Also in a hybrid trailer.
  • When I was kid, I was in Boy Scouts. We had an annual winter campout in a big old army tent with no floor. We scraped as much of the snow off as possible, laid down a big piece of heavy plastic and set up the tent. Then we took a couple of bails of hay and spread them around. We had a great time sledding all day, so we were all ready for bed by about 8PM.

The park ranger (who lived just down the road) came out about midnight and put his spotlight on the tent. "Everybody okay in there ?" "Yeah we are trying to sleep !" "The 11PM news said the temp was going to get down to -20 !" "Go away !"

Now I don't know if that was actual -20 or -20 windchill, but it was darn cold. The big discussion was do you sleep in your long johns which were still full of sweat or take them off so they can hope dry a bit before you got in you sleeping bag !

    Good times !
  • Coldest I've experienced in my camper has been -20 F, here in Michigan. Close second was -14 F in Iowa.

In years past I've enjoyed winter camping. It can be so very quiet. This year I'm having trouble getting motivated to head out into the harsh weather.
