How Do You Follow Weather Reports As You Travel?

We are planning a long trip. Our first point-of-interest is in Iowa where they are experiencing tornadoes and very bad weather now. In fact, the whole mid-west is having daily storms and tornadoes. How do you stay aware of weather as you travel? We use the Weatherbug app and will turn it on to allow it to know our location at all times so we will get warnings and alerts. But I'm afraid it will be too late. We will also use our batwing antenna to get local weather. Any other ideas?

  • I have road conditions on my cell for the highways we are using in the winter time not so much in summer to fall.

  • I use Weatherunderground.com. Then I select Wondermaps and personal weather stations. It allows me to see the wind all across a wide swath of the local area. It's quite easy to see if there is a local disturbance that needs to be avoided.

We have satellite tv, Direct. What channel do you use?

the weather channel. check your program guide.

i should've added that while severe weather is a concern it's not something you should stress yourself about. severe wx does not pop up unexpectedly...it is forecast several days in advance. be aware but do not be afraid.
  • You do understand that thunderstorms are relatively small and you can see them from a long ways away, right? Also, tornadoes are much smaller and rare, as much as the media hypes them, you would think the happen every day.
Your smart phone can be an excellent tool, and it is what we use when we travel long distances on our motorcycles.
I would take a thunderstorm over an earthquake any day. Sound familiar?

Seriously though, the Red Cross has an excellent warning app, but I forget the name right now.
  • assuming you don't have satellite access then the internet, OTA TV and the weather channel on the park's cable system. if you're not staying in a park that has cable then diwnload the weather channel app can provide forecasts several days out for any location in the country. severe weather is not something to trivialize especially in an RV.
