How do you remember to switch the fridge?

We have a 3-way dometic fridge that requires manually switching between the modes. We are great at remembering to switch modes when we camp for the night, but have a terrible time remembering when we stop in the middle of the day to see attractions. I know some people just leave it on propane all the time, but I don't want to do that. Any suggestions on how to remember to take it off battery and put it on propane?

When travelling propane must be turned of when fueling and going thru some tunnels, etc. For short stops, we just leave it on battery. Long stops propane.

I like the colored yarn idea, except that I need a red bandana to get my attention. When the TV roof antenna is up, I hang one red bandana from the crank in the ceiling. As a reminder that my outdoor wireless thermometer is hanging outsde, I hang a red bandana from the door of my propane compartment.

Being from "out West" I took an old horseshoe, painted it bright orange, and hook it onto the steering wheel when I put the antennae up. If I forget to lower it I am reminded as I sit in the "pilot's" chair!

  • I'm too old to depend on my memory anymore. I typed up lists of "things to do" for making camp and leaving camp and put them inside clear plastic covers. I check them off with a grease pencil as I do them.
I once saw somebody start to drive away with the sewer hose still deployed. I prefer to learn from someone else's mistakes.
  • I use a check list in the truck that list all the has all the items that I want to make sure are done before I start truck and leave. The list include all items the start of making ready to leave to starting truck. Chords hoses, blocks picked up, jacks up, antenna down, steps up, Trailer pigtail in, check hitch, Ref on Gas, Etc. Just think of all that you do toleave and do a rough draft that you can change after a few times, then do a final copy.

Learned this form flying, as always used check list to take off and land.
  • I use the RVMinders (you can get them at CW). I changed one I didn't need for Fridge on 12v. It slaps on the steering wheel so when I get to my destination, I can switch it, then I slap the Propane On onto the steering wheel.

Of course, as long as my fridge is cooled, it can sit unopened for up to about 4 hours without warming up (I usually have one or two frozen blue ice packs in the freezer for a double check) - as long as it isn't 90+ outside and in the sun.
  • Run the battery down a few times and then you should remember to swap......works for me. 2nd time I ran into open slide out and leaked blood I quit doing it :B

Print up a note in BOLD letters..........place on dashboard.

    Simple clue..........something like FRIDGE!!!!!
  • Hang a piece of colored yarn on the entrance doorknob on the inside. You will see it before exiting the vehicle. After switching modes put the yarn on the gear shift. It reminds you to switch modes before continuing on your way.
