How far is your drive for good warranty service.

Just curious here.

Do you drive long or short distances for warranty or any service on your RV?

Also how willing are you to tackle a difficult repair yourself?

  • When I had a warranty I pretty much had to go 3 states away back to the factory in Indiana 8 hours. So it had to be a big job before it would go back there. I knew going in that I was not going to have local support through the dealer network. I made the choice to save over $10,000 on purchase price by going out of state. I figured I would never make that amount up in warranty work. Now that it is out of warranty I fix anything I can. Had a slide I couldn't adjust so I took it to a dealer an hour away to have them do it.

I avoid having a dealer mess up basically a good thing for minor issues and if the repair is under $100 to $200 I will do it myself. An RV is not much different in many respects than what you do at home.

Well it all depends on what you call difficult. For me major axle work such as alignment/replacement, major exterior repair replacement such as replacing a front cap, etc. (removing and resealing a window is IMO not a dealer, but owner repair) would be beyond my capabilities or desire to mess with. Just about everything else is something I would do since I might have to do it anyway after the warranty is gone anyway unless I want to pay a dealer their high costs to do the work out of warranty. I have repaired furnaces, replaced water heaters, completely replumbed the FW system, and replaced waste water plumbing and valves. About the only repair I wouldn't attempt is AC replacement just due to the weight and access to the roof and probably refer replacement since that is usually covered for free or a minimal fee at Camping World and I wouldn't want to mess with disposing of the old refer.

  • Those of you that have found a good repair facility are very lucky. I have driven as far as 150 miles and have not found a good one yet. All require at least two trips to get a item repaired correctly. I do most of my repair myself because of this.
  • About 1-2 miles.............

As far as what repairs I will do depends on the job....... my dealer is close & charges around $60 labor rate. Things I would do 30 years ago I figure My time is worth more now & I am a lot slower LOL..... I put a whole corner of a Terry back together (frame & siding) in the 80s but would probably not tackle it now.......
  • Closest dealer for warranty or any service work is the Dealer where we purchased the MH - 130 miles away. But then this is where we do our shopping and this is where our Doctors are too. I am very willing to fix and repair what I can. I do all of the scheduled maintenance.

my dealer, with so far fantastic service the very few times I needed it, is less than 3 miles away.

And there are few repairs I don't do myself. Slide adjustment is one of the few I leave to the dealer.
  • When I do take my DP to a service center it is about an hour drive. Their backlog is long waits...usually 2 weeks or more.I do everything myself unless I don't have the proper tools or diagnostic tools available.
  • I found a good dealer but the business has been sold to a less than stellar competitor, the lease is expiring so it is being shut down. :( The next dealer is 40 miles away and I was not impressed with him either.
