How hard is it to install new electric brakes ?

I adjusted mine today through the hole in the back plate, but I have never had the wheels apart.
Can some one walk me through the procedure

remove wheel, remove cotter pin, remove hub nut, pull drum off. outter bearing and race will just fall out. with hub off remove 4 9/16 screws holding backing plates off. cut two wires running to magnets. Put new backing plates on. reconnect wires, replace everything, probably would do a new bearing pack with new seal since all is apart. And put new cotter pin back in. adjust brake to where a regular turn on the wheel on trailer turns about 1 1/2 times. Job complete....have a beer.

That pretty much says it all. The magnets when new have dimples on the face. If they are worn smooth its best to replace them even if they still work. If replacing the magnets, you might just as well buy new assemblies as the magnets by themselves cost almost as much a complete unit. Also get some heat shrink tubing and slide a piece over the wire before soldering. That will give you a less chance of a problem down the road.

Per David's instructions a new magnet is already a part of the backing plate.

  • It's impossible to know a poster's skill set from just a post.
If someone has never removed a hub or replaced brake components, I'd suggest taking it to someone that has experience or enlisting help from someone that has done more than just a few. It is very probable that things are not going to go back together correctly and this is one area where just a small error can bring very bad results.

  • same as changing brake shoes on older vehicles except there is no wheel cylinder just a electro magnet on an arm that drags on drum to operate brakes when applied.Nothing to changing them.Be sure to look magnets over real good or replace them
