Thanks for all the advice! Since it was a car hauler (open) there was no frontal area, or side area. This was the total purpose of my thread, not to get into a weight argument, but to talk about the impact of towing a travel trailer. It seems payload is the only real limiting factor here for my truck.
And I am not ignoring people's advice, just stating I towed 5500lbs for years with a lesser truck (dodge platform) with no problems and wanted to understand how towing a travel trailer with large wind resistance would be in comparison.
I am going to buy a used travel trailer, so I may not have the luxury of buying one that is the perfect exact fit for my vehicle. I only plan on using it a few times a year and probably not traveling more than a few hundred miles at a time (if that). It is going to come down to what I can get at a good price. If a local dealer has a 31ft at a good price vs. a 28ft that is more expensive, I have to put that into my equation.
If I were towing across country or through mountains, I would probably have bought a different truck and been much more picky on my choice of trailer. I probably would just have bought a class C. I may only drive an hour or two to the local race track to stay the night. My plan is to buy a $10k travel trailer, use if for a few years and sell it and move on. I leased my truck, so by then I can just get another that fits my needs at that time.
This post does bring some clarity to your situation.
Your prior towing experience with open trailers is totally different than towing an RV.
Aerodynamics and air resistance are a huge factor in RV towing. Open trailer towing and towing a TT are an apples and oranges comparison.
