How long can you keep water in tank?

How long can you keep fresh water in your tank? I would think at some point-in-time, with all the stagnant water, bacteria and other harmful things could grow.

  • Winnebago recommends that the water system be sanitized prior to the first use, if the coach has not been used "for a period of time," one that could have become contaminated, and prior to long periods of storage, such as over the winter.

That is the procedure we use. For me, "a period of time" is about 45 days, which rarely happens for us, except during the winter. Sanitizing the water system does take several hours, but is not labor intensive.

  • In our previous TT I cleaned and sanitized the tank once during the 8 years we had it. Always drained it in the fall. I guess you could leave water in it but well water tends to contain minerals and bacteria that eventually cause issues.
  • I agree with the others. I sanitize once a year and have not ever had a problem in 11 years with this trailer. We use tank water mostly for bathing, dishes, what have you, drink mostly bottled water, and use a Brita water pitcher to filter tank water for coffee, tea,,and cooking etc.

Virtually every water fill has been from a municipal water source though. I have not ever added water in my tank direct from streams or other natural sources.
  • I sanitize in the spring and keep tank full all season long until November no issue in 7 years.
  • I sanitize my tank in the spring, usually mid April, and fill about 1/3 full with our spring fed water. I then use the MH, refilling the tank as necessary, until we stop using the MH, about mid October. Never had a problem with the water.

If you are nervous about that you could add a little chlorine from time to time.
  • Good question, I'll be interested to see the responses.

FWIW ... certainly hasn't been a data-driven decision, but for lack of knowing any different, I drain mine once a month, sanitize the system every 6 months. Generally always chlorinated city water, might be overkill for what is really needed, but no need for any GI issues to spoil a trip!

I am generally in parks with hook ups, so only carry enough for road-side bathroom runs, hand washing, etc.
