How many miles have you towed in one day?

We are planning a trip to Yellowstone next August. I want to go about 550 miles the first day. My wife says thats too far. What do others think?
  • Since we are still working and considered as weekend warriors, we need to push sometimes.

When we take our trips to and from Florida we will drive hard the first day. This makes the 2nd day easier and better to unload if going home..

When in Florida ( Sarasota ) we will go all the way to Doswell VA on the first day ( 870 miles) .. that leaves us 300 or so miles the second day..
This allows us more time to enjoy, and ample time to unload/clean/ and get ready for work the next day..
  • It's too far.
I hope you are not going to average the responses to use as an argument for driving farther than your Wife would like. How long have you been married?
  • We try not to drive at night, expecially thru construction areas but often find ourselves on the road just before daybreak. We eat early and don't resume driving until the next morning. A nice day with sights on the way would be 250 miles, destination driving perhaps 350 miles per day. Have done 450 miles per day for an unplanned "have to be there on time" event.
BTW, we split the driving 60/40....and I find I have to fight for every minute of my 40%. She likes driving that much.
  • We occasional drive 500+ miles on the first day of our far away destinations. Though, we wouldn't want to do it every day. My wife and I take turns driving generally after each rest stop or gas fill up along the way. Prevents driver fatigue.
  • We left south FL once on Friday and arrived at Glacier NP Sunday afternoon. Two drivers taking turns. :)

Since retiring we occasionally still do 600 or so in a day, but it's not enjoyable. That's for when life drops an unplanned issue in your lap.

    Listen to your wife.
  • That's nearly 12 hours of driving, a lot, but it depends on how you like to travel. I did 900 miles once- 18 hours, but that wasn't fun.
