How to add bleach to fresh water tank

The only way I can find to put water/bleach into the fresh water tank for cleaning is through the "city water" hose connection. Because of the angle of that connection and the screen over it/in it, pouring bleach in there is impossible. Even with a funnel. The only way I see to do it is to pour bleach into the water hose, connect it to the faucet and turn on the water.

On our previous motor homes, there was a filler for the fresh water tank similar to the filler for a gas tank. Used a funnel and poured bleach in that, then added water. No filler like that on this motor home.

Any other ideas on how to deal with the problem?

  • I,ve drained my hose ,poured the bleach into the house then hooked to my fill. just be caeful. you only need a cup of bleach.
  • The above two responses are good examples of people not carefully reading the original poster's statement! He has no fresh water fill port so cannot use that method.....and his city fill port has a screen in it so he cannot stick any kind of funnel in it. Given his problem, all I can come up with at the moment is for him to fabricate a short hose a couple feet long, screw it onto his city water inlet and then insert a funnel into other end and pour his gallon mixture of bleach solution .....( NOT STRAIGHT BLEACH )! Others have simply poured the gallon of bleach solution into their empty city water hose and then connected to water supply and let the bleach solution get forced in that way.

You don't want to put it in the city connection. You want to put it into the water tank fill inlet so it will sterilize the onboard tank, then run through the system. I add around 1/4 cup with a funnel. I would drain the tank 1st, add bleach. the book says to drain again and add fresh water but I just leave the bleach because we don't drink out of the tank. But follow your owner's manual.

Maybe I'm not doing a good job of explaining my situation. There is only one way to fill the fresh water tank that I can find. And that is through the "water fill inlet". That is at a 90 degree angle with a wire mesh just inside the opening. There is no way to pour bleach into it at that angle. I cannot insert a funnel because of the wire mesh.

  • Get one of those funnels with a collapsible hose-like tail end. Try auto stores.

    Or a turkey baster.

May I also suggest using hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach? Pour a whole quart in and let it sit for 24 hours. Easier to flush out and leaves no aftertastes.
