How to stay warm with out electricity?

I check the long term weather forecast for our mid-April trip. The first stop at Great Sand Dunes NP in CO is in southern CO but at an elevation of about 8,000 feet. We can expect low temp at night in the 20's and we could see snow. The park campground is not fully open, but some campsites are open.

The 5er has a furnace but it is not very efficient and burns a lot of propane per hour. When I have FHU I use 2 small electrical heaters and an electric blanket to stay warm. We will not have electricity at GSD NP.

Can anyone suggest a good Very Warm down (?) Comforter?

Park you trailer in the sun during the day. Keep it closed up and the inside temperature should not be much lower than the low 40s if it is in the 20s outside. Any decent sleeping bag will work in those temperatures. Add some blankets if you like. Costco has some good inexpensive down comforters.

In the morning you can turn on the furnace to take the chill off running off your batteries. In a medium sized trailer just making coffee with a gas stove warms things up considerably.
  • You might be able to find a warmer sleeping bag you could unzip and use like a comforter?
  • THere is no magic pill if you really want heat you will have to supply your own energy /electric via a generator.
A 2nd battery would also be a good idea. You could get a 2000 watt portable genset and 2nd battery for $600.00 or so.
With a genset you will be fine. Without an electric source cross your fingers and hope. Your single battery may not last even 1 night.
If you don't care to invest you maybe able to rent a generator.
Be sure to use a quiet inverter genset and follow the CG genset rules whatever you do.
  • Ikea has nice comforters, in various sizes, in both synthetic and down versions. You could have a look there? we use them at home and on the road. JYSK in Canada has similar linens.
  • You should be using your furnace in those temps to keep the pipes warm.
