How to tow our Wrangler?

Hi,

We are driving a Dodge RAM 3500 and carry a truck camper (with no overhang). The truck camper is light for the truck as it is built for a 1/2 ton truck. So, going forward, we would like to tow our 2002 Jeep Wrangler (2-door) behind the truck; thinking that towing a small car like a Wrangler isn't a problem for the Dodge truck; to be able to use it for some offroading and getting to places we can't reach with the truck and camper combination.

How do we do this? I have seen several different ways of towing a vehicle behind an RV and I wonder what are the good/bad things of each. For example, I've seen a system attached to the Jeep that hooks into the towing system on the truck/RV; or a dolly where the Jeep drives its 2 front wheels onto; or a dolly where the entire Jeep drives onto during towing.

Based on how inconvenient it is to have a full car dolly with you on the campground, even when the Jeep is not on it, I would prefer the simpler/smaller towing solutions; not too mention to keep it as low cost (but sturdy and reliable) as possible.

Any advice?

Jorn

  • I've towed our ('12) Wrangler behind our F350 Crew Cab 4x4 several times using our blue ox tow bar,
the jeep tows better (4 wheels down) than our 16' (flat/open) trailer...and the trailer tows heavier (even though its 1/2 the weight of the wrangler).

a supplemental brake system (brake buddy etc) is nice (in the jeep) but it is NOT necessary.

if your truck has a class 4 or 5 receiver hitch the connections are easy.

You'll need add some BASE PLATES to the front of your jeep (they bolt to the frame, behind the bumper) and you'll need to determine how to wire the jeeps tail/stop lights to the truck.

    etrailer.com has the parts & information you'll need -

    TJ (2002) base plates http://www.etrailer.com/towbar-2002_Jeep_TJ.htm

  • While small, Wranglers weigh in at 4k#. The are good toads but you should have supplemental braking. I use and recommend Ready Brute tow bar with built in surge braking. Simple, less expensive and it works. Easy to connect.
  • The 4WD Wrangler can only be towed 4 Down or on a trailer. It cannot be towed on a dolly. It is one of the most common "toads" for the motorhome crowd. As instructed get a baseplate installed and buy a tow bar. You'll also need a supplemental braking system. All of these questions would be more appropriate in the "Dinghy" forum....
