How worried should we be?

First I don't want this to get into a political issue!!

We don't camp south of the border. The last time we considered it was quite a few years ago. We were lost and got into an area in Syracuse NY where we got scared enough we turned around and headed home. We only stopped for gas and the border. We didn't make it to our campground in Pennsylvania.

We do travel into the US a lot, Michigan and Indiana. We have been told on various trips to assume everyone is carrying a gun and to be careful not to look at someone the wrong way.

Our friends daughter works for border security and said that a lot of people try to cross into Canada with loaded weapons either on them or in the vehicle. One family went into the wrong lane. They were not wanting to come across the border but had no where to turn around. They sent them back to the US. This family with small children had 6 loaded weapons. Each parent with 2 on their person and one on the floor of the vehicle and one in the stroller basket. This family were just out for the day to take their kids for a picnic.

Now, I ask because I am ignorant to all of this, just how worried should we be. I know there was a topic about protecting yourself while boondocking but I am petrified to even think of camping. I am anxious as soon as I cross the border.

I hate this feeling. I know that everyone is not out to shoot you but I can't shake it. On our last trip we saw people actually having a gun on them.

I understand we have more guns up here but unless you are hunting it is unlikely you own a gun. I know we have had issues with people here that have caused death and injury but I am not concerned that we may get shot on the street or camping.

Just how concerned should I be. What are the do's and don'ts to stay safe. I am sure I am asking a question that many would like to.

I want to be able to enjoy all of North America. There are so many great places and people to visit.
  • I know that it is me and anxiety. I was raised in northern England in a small village and then moved here and have lived in the country all my life. I never saw a hand gun until 2 years ago in Michigan, ( except the guns in Syracuse) and I have grandchildren. I am sure once we get to know people personally my fears will leave.

You talk about the wild wild west. When I came to Canada my teacher told my class we were moving to a place that had cowboys and indians that fought and Canadians lived in igloos. Can you imagine how I believed her when we came by ship across the top of Newfoundland and passed all the icebergs. We were not talking 50 years ago either when that happened.
  • Grew up in Detroit. Lived here 50 years and never needed to own a gun. I see people with them but have never seen anyone actually have to use them. I think I'm safe here. Stay out of bad inner city neighborhoods and you'll be fine. I understand your fear because I feel about Mexico the way you do about the states. Just generalizing about a few news stories.

Yes I do conceal carry a 9mm most of the time and no this is not the wild west. I'm sure in Canada you have crime, shooting, domestic violence, murder etc just as we do here in the states. We have rights and one of those rights is the second amendment that allows us to keep and bear arms. Its usually not the ones that are legally carrying there weapon its the criminals that are the ones you need to worry about. Stay in the safe area of the towns you are visiting and you won't have an issue, just like in Canada. Come visit our beautiful country, its a little warmer down here also.

When you are visiting how do you determine what the safe areas are?

I would say a little common sense would go a long way to figuring out the good part from the bad part of a town. If unsure, I'm sure a local officer of the law would be more than happy to assist you.
  • Come on down to some campgrounds in the NY Adirondacks. On holiday weekends you'll hear more French than English.
I'm a gun owner but the hodge podge of state laws keeps me from having one when travelling. I've never felt threatened but then again a little bit of situational awareness goes a long way.
  • Come down through Minnesota, you won't have a problem. BTW, we have the nicest rest areas in the US, most of them manned by one guy that takes pride in the facility.

  • 6000 people die in this country every day but a lot of us don't. The odds are with you.
  • Thousands of Canadians travel throughout the US without any problems. When in the big cities don't get off the beaten path. There are alot of things to see and do that are safe. Just always plan where you go.
  • I have traveled all of this fine country all of my life. I have been to almost every state and have never felt in danger or feared for my life. Never had anyone pull a gun on me or near me. Sure we have bad people, and bad areas just like any other country, the majority of people are good people just trying to live and eak out an existence in this world we call home. The majority of residents do not own guns and we don't have people running around waving guns around. The wild west is gone. I have met more people willing to help out than hurt.

I have also travelled to more than 25 countries around the world. I remain aware of my surroundings, take advice of local people and try not to let my worries get the best of me.
