I have a question on towing a smaller trailer

Safe bet is always staying Under the max tow rating. We had a neighbor do just that with a mini van and they smoked their tranny. They were under their tow rating, but when you factor in some good grades and high summer heat, you can kiss it all good buy.

She needs an F450 dually.

Don't recommend going over the weight rating but also depends where she will be towing.

Flat lands in normal conditions, she might get away with it.

Mountains and it is far more likely to have a failure.

Confirming real ratings is step one - as noted above.

After that, in the case you suggest, a 2,250 pound trailer is going to weigh more than that with propane and basic gear. Add in food, gear, passengers, etc.. in the Equinox and you will be quickly overweight. Personally, I would not tow anything but a small utility trailer with a 4 cal engine - but to each their own.
