The point is that many times it ends up as a "my way is the only way and you're an idiot if you do it differently" fight between a few folks derailing otherwise very interesting threads. A recent thread on buying new versus old (which was pretty calm considering the topic) has devolved into an "if you don't camp the way I do, you should stay home" fight between two posters.
