Installing SMI Stay-In-Play Duo on 2006 Jeep Liberty

I have recently acquired a 2006 Jeep Liberty for flat towing behind my gas motorhome. I have already installed the Blue Ox base plate and a tow wiring harness. The last step is to install the supplemental braking system. I have decided to go with the SMI Stay-In-Play Duo as it does not need to be installed or removed every I want to tow. I'm looking for some recommendations on where to install the operating unit. If anyone has experience with this I would love some feedback. As always pictures are very helpful.

I'd like to see pictures if you have them. Coincidentally I'm watching True Grit as I type this.

Here is a video from eTrailer on putting a Duo into a 2006 Jeep Liberty if that would help.

I just put one in my 2017 Honda Fit and it's not too hard of a job.

  • I installed mine on the drivers side inside the fender in the engine compartment. Ran the wires through the rubber grommet in the firewall next to the steering housing. Take your tail lights out and put in separate bulbs and sockets in the tail light housings and you don't need to plug into your jeeps elec.
  • I ran vacuum and electrical along the driver's side of the console under the carpet. Used an electrical fish tape rather than removing the console.
  • I thought about under the driver's seat as well since there's plenty of room but I don't see how I could run the vacuum line to the engine compartment.
  • My older control is larger then the newer models. I installed mine under the front drivers seat.
Not sure how much extra space you have under the hood.
