Insurance info

People frequently post questions regarding best deals on RV insurance. Just wanted to point out that if you are old enough for AARP, their insurance was cheaper in my case AND they include RV road service/towing at no additional charge. AARP uses Hartford Ins.

I had State Farm many years ago and yes, the agent had a "real" office and he was a nice person. When I checked rates I found I was paying $600 too much for coverage. So I went to another company that also had an office and pocketed the difference. I shop every 2-3 years with an independent agent, still have a local person, and get good rates and coverage. I have never had an issue with any claim I have filed.
  • Had Hartford a number of years ago and they handed the one claim I had fairly. Until a few days ago I was a with Good Sam for 7 years. Every year they raised prices a little each year. When I received my renewal last month and I shopped prices with a number of companies and settled on Liberty Mutual. They gave me a one year policy instead of 6 months. When I called National General I asked about the pricing on my RV. Found out that it was $486.00 for 6 months. Liberty was cheaper by several hundred dollars and RV insurance was $154./year. Got better coverage, lower deductibles and saved money. Progressive and Hartford was higher and RV cover was $400. plus for 6 months.
Lot's of variables such as location, history, type of coverage etc. What I don;t understand is how they can save of all the money they advertise yet still be high.:h
  • there is, or should be, more to selecting an insurance carrier than price. all are happy to sell you a policy but some may be not so happy to hear from you later which is when you need them the most. we've been State Farm customers for all our vehicles since 1970. claims have always been handled quickly and fairly. it's also nice to have a real agent in a real office to call.
  • I generally do a insurance check up about every three years. Just finished last year and Farm Bureau which I had during the check up period is by far the cheapest. Actually a couple of independent agents would not even quote me when they say I had FB. Said they could not be competitive.
  • Shop around regardless of where you are. Farm Bureau cost us WAAAAY less than AARP or anyone else quoted.

+, I don't like buying from companies that pick political candidates and fund them like AARP does. Regardless if I agree with them or not. But that's a different thread.
  • I believe some AARP positions aren’t fair to younger Americans and some of their “deals” aren’t very good.

I had AARP insurance through Hartford years ago. Then an agent changed me over to Hartford w/o an AARP endorsement and saved us around $150 with the same coverage. Probably the same thing today. I am still an AARP member but don't rely on their endorsements for any purchase.
