To be able to run the A/C and a major appliance at one time I'll need no less than 3000 watts. I'm either not understanding properly or something as I'm understanding that I'll need an inverter charge...

You will find inverter chargers are common in other applications. IE backup power battery banks. The main purpose is to put out power when the utility goes down. When the utility power comes back up, the unit will recharge and maintain the battery bank.
