Is Roadside assistance worth it?

Hello All,

My wife has had a AAA standard policy for a long time. I dont think it covers the travel trailer as well. Is adding an RV policy through AAA or Good Sam worth it? We used to do most of our camping within 2-300 miles from home, but over the past 3 years we have started doing 1000+ mile trips each year. I think if there was a tire blow out I would likely change it myself, but anything other than that it would certainly be nice to have assistance.

Roadside assistance in general is always mixed reviews so what are your thoughts and suggestions around travel trailer coverage?

Thanks

  • With a smart phone you can obviously google and find a towing company yourself without too much effort. But finding a good one that is experienced in towing RVs may be a little harder especially in a more remote area. A good ERS will already know, or should already know, who can do that.
  • I think Roadside Assistance is a must have,as a 50+member of AAA I have had always been happy with the high level of service they provide.

I added the RV to the AAA Plus policy years ago, cheaper as a add on than other stand alone policies They have always performed to my satisfaction.
  • Probably a good thing to have.....if you have problems, where you have cell phone reception. Some of the best places to travel, have no service. ;). So, it’s good to be prepared to take care of some issues yourself!
  • I have my roadside with my insurance company, USAA. I dropped Good Sams years ago.
  • I can change all my tires quickly and easily...but some locations scare the heck out of me and I call AAA. Narrow highway, driver’s side, night etc.
  • We always have roadside assistance and over 20 years have only used it 3X. 2X were for changing a tire. Those big tires are just too big and heavy for DH to handle now. We do have a spare so obtaining a replacement is not part of the issue as with some people.

One flat occurred on I65 just south of Nashville. It was very scary watching the service man change that tire on the drivers side. His rear was hanging out into the traffic with many transports whizzing by him. I guess the bottom line is that maybe you are able to change the tire yourself but the location can be the problem.

For less than $100/year I think the peace of mind is worth the cost.
  • I would say keeping a roadside assistance policy of some brand is imperative. Nice when my truck quit outside of a town I was visiting and I was on the side of a mountain and no clue who could come. Limited cell sevice so internet on phone wasn't working. I called and they found a tow company. Once they identified company, I was able to call and beg for a quick pickup. having someone do the work of calling tow companies and finding someone for me, was well worth the cost. Add in the tow was included in my plan, and it was double worth it. The single tow would have been more than the annual fee for my plan.
  • Only when you need it.
I've had GSERS for over 10 years and no complaints.
