- rhagfoExplorer IIIJack-knifed, and spun out!
Look closely and you can see the skid marks, and they are pointing the wrong way.
Cause?
Could be many things, just glad the TV is mostly intact and OP mentioned no ambulance! - Tom_BarbExplorer

99% of the jack knife occurrences can be attributed to one of three things, poor driver control, overloaded/incorrect loading of the trailer, or the load was too much for the TV.
In an emergency the poorly trained driver will jerk the wheel and hit the brakes, and they will be looking at the side of the trailer before they can say Oh Shi-
Over loading will always get you in trouble, in one way or another.
And the last of the bunch is not enough TV for the job. specially when the driver compensates with equipment like a load equalizing hitch. In reality equipment malfunctions leave you in a position for an accident.
I look back on when I was a kid towing a 2 ton hay wagon with a military surplus jeep, and wonder why I didn't get killed - blt2skiModeratorConsidering I have had a 12k MDT truck vet tossed around by an improperly balanced 8k trailer, not sure a fuLly 1 ton is better than a class 6 MDT with a longer an no less!
There is NO such thing as too my,h dog if the trailer starts to go around.

Where can you see that the trailer brakes failed? Ken
You only need to look at the picture to see that that trailer pushed that Ford SUV around like a toy. maybe the trailer brakes did not fail, maybe they were simply set wrong, either way, that trailer pushed that TV around into a jack knife and it will not do that if the brakes are working as they should.
Had he a dually we would not have this thread. that's my humble opinion.
You are so right!
Hmm, when I had my Dually I didn't detect any magic anti jack knife towing dust...Not sure how having a Dually would have kept this particular event from happening either. Especially since we have 1 picture after the accident with no details.
I assure you a Dually can still jackknife....a crew cab Dually turns slower, handles worse, and possibly would have handle this event much worse than the expedition with its 4 wheel independent suspension. Ever seen a HD truck do evasive maneuvers with a trailer in tow compared to a(n actual) good handling vehicle? The Dually may have been on its top in this instance. At least the ex kept the rig on its wheels.
Just musing...since we are all speculating at this point.
Thanks!

Dream on
What am I dreaming about? I have owned a Dually crew cab long bed. It handled terribly, even compared to my F150. What part am I dreaming about?
The FACT is that the Ex in the pic and the Airstream are still on their wheels. How well does 8500 lbs of top heavy Dually handle when the back end gets lose? Two words "Not Good"...and that is based on experience.
Correct me if I am wrong. I am wide open...what did I miss?
Thanks!

How can it fishtail with a Hensley? Here is what Hensley says about that on their website:
What does the Arrow® do? It eliminates any possibility of trailer sway. That’s not a misprint or an exaggeration. It is physically impossible for a travel trailer to sway, fishtail, or jackknife when outfitted with the Hensley Arrow®.
Cheers,
John
I am sure there is more to it than that. Maybe something about having enough dog for the tail to begin with? - BirdmaestroExplorerHow can it fishtail with a Hensley? Here is what Hensley says about that on their website:

John - Cummins12V98Explorer IIIPut all the load leveling sway control you want on many combo's you see people towing with if ya don't have the dog to control the tail in a panic condition the tail will win every time!
You people with big TT's and small TV's are on borrowed time.
I went thru a roll over with having what I was told was good equipment. Towed the same rig later with a Dually, no comparison!
Ya all just keep thinking "I can tow anything" with the proper anti sway devices. Think about it if TT's were so safe to tow they would not need these devices.
No one knows what happened in that picture. I know that was too much TT for the TV. - Cummins12V98Explorer III
