Your wife driving is most likely the better option, even if a night on the road and she can get the extra time off.
It seems the tow bars can be picked up fairly reasonable, but the baseplate and installation adds the expense The supplemental braking (if required by state law or in my "weight" case, by Ford Motor Company towing requirements can also be picked up used. Not a cheap thing to do any which way you go.
Maybe someone will have more options for you, but I set up two cars from scratch and the last one, just baseplate and wiring (used tow bar on hand)
