- PopsieExplorerThere are a lot of variables. We've belonged twice. In both cases, we found a park where we wanted to stay for a while which happened to participate in Passport America. We purchased the membership from the campground when we arrived, and got the discount - and they were very accommodating because we were buying from them (I think they get to keep most if not all of your membership fee if you buy from the campground).
After our initial buys, we did use the discount a few times, but we didn't use it often because we based our location and campground choices on other factors. When each of our memberships expired, we did not renew, because we had learned that we could join on the spot if we happened to choose to stay at another Passport America campground. - bertnspikeExplorerI found that the parks offering Passport America discounts for only a certain number of days or not allowing holidays would still give the discounts for the qualifying portion of my stay. That often ended with the average price still being cheaper than parks not offering PA. If you use commercial or private RV parks it will pay for itself in one or two stays. If you travel during the "off" season, you may find the discounts being given to you without regard to stated limitations.
- bdpreeceExplorer IIBest $44 I ever spent. We have used it a lot and are very satisfied. You do need to check the rules and check rv park reviews as some of the parks are not 5 star resorts.
- RoyBExplorer IIII used something like that until I qualified for the Natl Park Service Senior Pass,,,
It is an one time $10 fee and gets you and all your passengers into all of the Natl Parks and other State and Federal places. Also alot of camp sites will give you a 50% discount...
got to save everywhere you can to off-set the gasoline costs these days... S250 plus just to go 450 miles pulling high trailers sucks big time..
Roy Ken - bukhrnNomadIf you travel around the country, it's well worth it, you make your dues back in the 1st or 2nd stay. If you only restrict yourself to a specific geographic area, there may not be a PA CG near by, therefore it would NOT be worth it.
There are restrictions at many of the CG's, like only valid from Sunday to Thursday, or not on holiday weekends, or certain times of year, some have no restrictions, if you are flexible enough, you can save a lot of money. I would suggest going to their website & looking around. Most people that have a problem with it, never checked it out first.
After you join, some of the restrictions can be worked around simply by talking to the CG directly, we stayed at one that had a maximum 6 day PA rate, we stayed 9 at the 50% rate.
You'll get answers from folks that it didn't work for, but personally, I won't be without it. - rockhillmanorExplorer III passed on passport.
Do a search 'first' on some of the CG's you'd be interested in staying at to get a feel of the availability to receive the discount.
I found most of them have sooo many exceptions it wasn't worth it. Like you can only stay there on the 3rd monday of the 4th month, Or only on a Wednesday, never 2 days is a row, etc. etc. And if it didn't have any restrictions when I called they said they no longer honored it.
I guess for the weekend RV'er that knows where they are "planning" on staying that particular weekend "in advance" it might work. I found for the traveling RV'er the time it took to find one that would honor the discount when I was passing thru a total waste of my time. - CentralCoastCamExplorerI joined this year, as the membership cost+ was recovered by the savings for an eight night stay at a park in San Diego. The park was good, in line with most parks I've stayed at. Whe we are planning a trip, I check the catalog to see if there's a participating park in the area. We don't plan our trips around member parks.
