KOA membership

Is the KOA membership really worth it? I know it's only $30 and you get 10% off. But don't they also offer 10% for AARP & disabled veterans? Of which I have both.
thanks

We generally use KOA's for overnight stops when traveling between destinations. So, the 10% off come in handy and the points usually gives us a few free nights a year.
  • We fulltime (15 years now). We don't care to stay in many KOA's because of the high price, but there are a few that we do. When visiting our daughter there are no other choices and the KOA is well managed and great people. We are there for a week x 2 a year. The other is near a cousin. . . again, really the only choice to be fairly close to him. We stay 2-3 nights there x 2 a year. We joined because almost every year we have accumulated enough points for a "free" night, which is about $58.

We think the membership is worth it. We would be staying there anyway, so may as well get something back.

  • We generally don't do the KOA membership, but did the membership last year as we booked a few on some trips, will probably renew this year as we have 2 stops booked again for this year.

  • I join upon staying. If I use it again then fine I came out ahead a little. Then it can expire until I stay at KOA again. No reason to just automatically renew.
  • I've never seen any other discount at a KOA besides their own. Most are privately owned though, so there might be some out there. We gave up our KOA membership when we our travels no longer found us staying at one more than once or twice a year. Before that, the membership had been paying for itself between the discounts and points.
  • We found it to be worth it when we were camping a lot of weekends as well as week-long trips but as ncrowley stated you do need to do the math.
  • In looking at the KOA web site, not all KOAs offer any kind of military discount. Also, when you join KOA, you get points for every stay in addition to the discount. When you accumulate enough points, you can use them for nights at a KOA.

You will need to do the math yourself based on how many KOA nights you plan to spend each year. We end up doing enough nights that it is worth the yearly cost.
