Not to beat up on you, but what caused the fire? An axle is just a hunk of steel and cannot catch on fire.
To take out the bearing and the bearing race and damage the spindle on both sides of the axle at the same time, something was seriously wrong somewhere. The bearings may have been way too tight or the brakes adjusted incorrectly. I don't really get the fire part of the story??? And why didn't the OP smell the heat doing a walk around when stopping for a break.
