Lafayette, Louisiana

Heading across country from California. Next stop is Lafayette, Louisiana ,interested in civil war history, any places that someone would like to share that you really enjoyed? Thank you.
  • Frog city campground 10 miles west of Lafayette is useful. Avery Island south of Lafay is interesting. Layafette itself was kinda off the beaten path for the civil war
  • Definitely visit Avery Island and the Tabasco factory.

    In New Iberia:
    Shadows-on-the-Teche
One of the few homes to survive the back and forth of the Confederate and Union armies in 1862 and 1863 was the well-known Shadows-on-the-Teche in New Iberia. It served as headquarters for Union officers, and suffered the usual depredations of hungry troops in search of food, drink, and souvenirs of Dixie. The site offers a nuanced interpretation of the antebellum, Civil War and post-bellum eras. 317 E. Main St., New Iberia, 337-369-6446

Lots of history in Baton Rouge 1.5 hours away.
North of Baton Rouge in Jackson LA is Port Hudson State Historic Site. 1.5 hours from Lafayette if you want to drive.
  • Cretien Point Plantation just north of Lafayette saw Civil War action. While not Civil War related Both Acadian Village and Vermilionville depict the history of Lafayette and ant Acadians. At Konrico Rice Mill in New Iberia you can see how rice is milled.
  • Avery Island salt was a necessary item for both North and South. Battles were fought for the salt.
  • We stayed at Cajun Palms, near Henderson for about a week and loved the place. Loved touring Breaux Bridge. Lars
