Leaking pressure release valve

Just replaced to hot water tank pressure release valve and re- establish the air pocket in the tank , but alas its still leaking. Could be a bad valve? Or any other suggestions would be appreciated .
Thanks Skipg

  • After several days our T&P would start to weep. I figured it lost the air bubble so I'd release the pressure, open the valve, and open the low point cold drain to get another bubble in it.
We just got back from a week-long trip w/o a leak. Maybe coincidence, but I installed an expansion tank this spring.
  • NEW T&P Relief Valve and it is leaking :H

With WH OFF, water cooled downed....OPEN valve with water supply still on and let it blow thru new valve. Stand back cause water should blow out several feet.

YUMA water and installing new T&P you probably stirred up some scale/debris from inside tank and it is stuck on valve seat

New valve and air pocket established.....T&P should not weep UNLESS normal t-stat/high temp t-stat have FAILED and water temp is 210*F or pressure inside tank is above 125 PSI
  • Ours will leak from time to time, no big issue just doing what it is suppose to. Generally happens mostly if we have the gas and electric on after our showers and we forgot to turn one off.
  • What is your hot water temperature? What PSI is your water pressure?

  • Take the valve off, soak it in vinegar water solution or a commercial cleaner. Rinse valve and replace. Should work fine after that.
  • Is your water heater on? Maybe it is just doing its job.
  • Empty tank and back flush valve to see if maybe a piece of grit is stuck.
Let dry, PB Blaster the rubber seal etc.
  • They often get stuck in a slightly open position. While you can play with it to get it to seal again, the risk is too high for my tastes and therefore just replace the valve. Its cheap insurance.
