Leer Toppers let me down

On March 6th I ordered a Leer 550 fiberglass tonneau cover and paid the local dealer 50%. They told me it would be "2-3 weeks".

After 3 weeks, I called dealer to check on status and she had to call factory. Said she would call me back. She did not call back so I called her THREE days in a row and she kept telling me that Leer was not responding to her emails. She finally said the "factory hadn't started it yet and didn't know when they would". When I told her I need it by May, she told me "if you don't like it, take your business somewhere else".

I did!

It doesn't matter if dealer was negligent in not sending my order or if Leer dropped the ball. The attitude shown by both was against all rules of business practices! Neither seemed to care about it.

It should be simply "get the job done and satisfy the customer".

The dealer also had the nerve to tell me that my 50% deposit was non-refundable. We had words about that until she realized that my credit card company would back me up and especially on an unfulfilled order.

The whole thing was a disappointing experience.
  • From your post, I can't see why you're upset with Leer. It sounds like you never contacted them. Did they ever receive your order ?
  • I have had great success with Leer tonneau covers. I have purchased three 700 Series tonneau covers from Truck N America over the last five years. Each time, I only had to give a $200 deposit, and I had my cover installed within two weeks. My most recent cover was installed about ten days after I placed the order over the phone. The paint is a perfect match and the fit is perfect.

I think you were dealing with a worthless distributor who held onto your (excessive) deposit for as long as possible before ordering your cover from Leer. I'm sorry your experience was bad, but I don't think you should think poorly of Leer because of it.

  • IDman, I understand and totally agree. Similar thing happened to me with a Leer Dealer. Dealer told me "we make no money on the toppers, its a loss leader to get customers in to buy an RV". I own a small business...I'm not stupid. You don't sell $2,000 toppers for NO PROFIT. I called him on it and he told me all dealers have to have the same price. I wasn't concerned about the price...but called him on it again by saying you just told me you lied about not making a profit...how can all leer dealers sell for same price but make no profit?

In the end, i bought an ARE, different dealer who didn't give me BS.

Getting harder to find honest businesses. I'd be upset if the dealer dropped the ball (or the factory)....but the truth is better.
  • We see more and more businesses acting in this manner. Sorry to hear of your issue, you may want to consider an A.R.E toppers
  • You could have dealt with a really bad dealer, I wouldn't necessarily blame Leer unless I talked to them directly. However this dealer sounds really lousy, and maybe they don't like to deal with Leer, or vice versa. :)
